Consumer reactions to recession
Consumer reactions to recession
News headlines in the last few months have made grim reading: the economy is entering recession, cost of living is up and house prices are down. What the news stories do not take into account is that consumers are affected, and will react, in different ways according to their circumstances and outlook on life. A recent report, “Reacting to Recession”, from M&C Saatchi looks at how different consumer groups are responding to the economic slowdown. The report divides consumers into eight groups: crash dieters, scrimpers, abstainers, clothcutters, treaters, justifiers, ostriches and vultures. They suggest that businesses will find opportunities by adapting their offer to different groups.
