Its the time of year when trendwatchers start to make predictions for the coming year.

Here are some from three of my favourite sources, Trendhunter, Trendwatching and Mintel...

Trendhunter's top 20 trends in 2009 include:

  • Return to the kitchen
  • DIY and rise of the cottage industry
  • Ageless inspiration
  • Urban gardening
  • Humanising pets
  • Prefabulous (prefab homes)
  • Smallchitecture (adapting to smaller living spaces)
  • Credit crunch couture

Trendwatching
offers half a dozen consumer trends for 2009:

  • Nichetributes (low cost, practical tributes to the zeitgeist)
  • Luxyoury (in 2009, you define what constitutes luxury)
  • Feedback 3.0 (think we’ve reached full transparency?)
  • Econcierge (savings are the new green)
  • Mapmania (why maps are the new interface)
  • Happy ending (the silver lining of each downturn)

In a free webinar, Mintel predicts top trends for 2009. It sees five key changes to consumer behaviour and how businesses can thrive. Around the world, people have been shaken into uncertainty by the economic crisis. But the recent US presidential election has given rise to feelings of hope and optimism. As a backlash against the fast pace of the modern world, people will try to take greater control of their lives and find pleasure in the simple things. Faced with financial insecurity, shoppers will seek out businesses and products they feel they can trust. And although they will cut back on spending, people will continue to treat themselves to little luxuries and fun activities.
