World of Warcraft logoShaping Tomorrow identifies escapism as a growing trend.

It says that with continuing gloomy economic news, discussions of consumers and business losing confidence, and forecasts that the recession will be longer and deeper than previously expected, we may be in for a boom in escapism.

It looks back at the Great Depression of the 1930s when Hollywood supplied a stream of escapist, romantic, often glamorous movies to transport people away from the pressures of the day. It suggests that we may see a similar move from the film industry now, as well as growth in computer games as people escape to virtual worlds, games, highways and byways. If the popularity of games such as of Word of Warcraft are anything to go by, I think they are onto something.

It also believes that other forms of escapism may also emerge: more drug and alcohol dependency, growth in simple inexpensive activities such as arts and crafts.
