Sainsbury's BasicsConsumers are becoming more savvy, changing the ways they shop, cook and eat, to save money.

Purchases of 'value' ranges in supermarkets such as Sainsbury's Basics are up in recent months, while organic, free range and premium lines are declining.

Discounters such as Aldi and Lidl are seeing growing numbers of customers, while upmarket stores, such as M&S, are losing food sales.

Prepared meals are declining as more and more people cook from scratch, encouraged by campaigns such as Jamie Oliver and Sainsbury's "feed your family for a fiver". The exception to the decline in ready meals, is ethnic food, as consumers replace expensive restaurant and takeaway meals with cook chill Chinese and Indian from the supermarket.
